Last fall, the Stanly County Board of Commissioners created a six-member committee to review the Telecommunication tower language in the zoning ordinance with the goal of strengthening the language and allowing towers which meet all guidelines to be constructed without requiring a rezoning of the parcel involved. The committee has had two meetings and has drafted some minor changes to the ordinance which increases the required setbacks from property lines and allows the Certificate of Zoning Compliance to be issued if the setbacks, buffers and other design characteristics are met on lots in the RA (Residential Agricultural), commercial and industrial zoning districts.

Telecommunication towers would not be allowed in higher density residential districts without a rezoning process. Once the new language is finalized, the Planning Board will review the proposed changes and recommend approval by the Board of Commissioners.

The Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing prior to adopting any ordinance change.

The Telecommunications Tower Committee has set five dates for public input on the suggested changes. The public is encouraged to drop-in to any of these meetings which will be held from 6:30- 7:30 p.m. on the dates indicated at the following locations:
Feb. 8 – Oakboro Community Building at Oakboro Regional Park;
Feb. 22 – Millingport Volunteer Fire Department;
March 8 – Stanly County Airport, Badin;
March 22 – Center Rural Fire Department, Norwood;
April 12 – Gene McIntyre Room, Stanly County Commons, Albemarle.

Members of the Telecommunications Committee include three county commissioners and three members of the County Planning Board – Tommy Jordan, Mike Barbee, Scott Efird, Tim Fesperman, T.J. Smith, Michael Williams.
