Gray Stone Mock Trial teams battle at regional event

On Feb. 5, the Gray Stone Day School Mock Trial Team competed against seven teams in the 2022 NCAJ High School Mock Trial Regional Competition.

North Carolina Mock Trial is an academic competition organized by the Carolina Center for Civic Education. It involves students portraying lawyers and witnesses in a simulated criminal or civic trial. Teams are scored by real judges and attorneys based on their knowledge of the law and the ability to think on their feet.

Gray Stone was able to organize two teams totaling 19 members.

The Gastonia Regional Champions include (Team Ancalagon) James Moser, Jackie Steenwyk, Wyatt Smith, Ethan Wilkins, Caleb Collins, Bladen Goodman, Olivia Marcoccia, Kinley Burleson, Anthony Grimes and Grace Peterson.

The Hendersonville Regional Champions (Team Smaug) are Stephanie Varbanov, Trista Gould, Ritika Ravikumar, Guy Thomas, Cameron Taylor, Emberleigh Pauley-Brown, Hunter Josey, Wesley Plyler and Hannan Berg.

The following students won Best Attorney: Abby Brown, Jackie Steenwyk, James Moser, Ethan Wilkins, Trista Gould, Stephanie Varbanov, Cameron Taylor and Kensi Bell.

Best Witness awards went to Laynie Friend, James Moser (Round 1 and Round 3), Wesley Plyler and Xavier Browning.

Gray Stone will compete in the state finals March 18-19.
