Face masks no longer required on Stanly school buses

Stanly County students are no longer required to wear face masks on school buses.
On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced it will no longer require face coverings to be worn on school buses. Instead it will allow school systems “at their discretion” to choose whether to require masks on buses.
Based on the change, the Stanly County Board of Education during its meeting Tuesday night unanimously approved continuing to make masks optional across the district, including on buses. It went into effect immediately.
“That’s definitely approved,” board chairwoman Glenda Gibson said.
The school system will meet with principals Thursday morning to “make sure that they’re aware of those changes through the CDC…and if they have any questions we can answer them then,” said Hope Miller-Drye, administrative and school board assistant.
Even though masks have been optional in Stanly County Schools since late October, masks have still been required on buses due to federal CDC law.
The change comes as Covid cases continue to decline across the country. Stanly County reported 82 new cases last week, the lowest total since late July and a 95 percent decrease from the week of Jan. 21, when a record 1,566 new cases were reported.
