West Stanly sweeps wins at Stanly County Schools meet

West Stanly’s track teams have been highly ranked in the state and continued a successful season Monday by sweeping the Stanly County Schools meet.

The Colts took first in the men’s team scores with a 104, followed by Albemarle (74) in second place. North Stanly was third with 55.5 points followed by South Stanly (22.5).

On the women’s side, West finished with 148 points, followed by the Bulldogs (65.5), Comets (23.5) and Bulls (2).

Four athletes received top individual honors, including the Male Field Athlete of the Year Ali Currie of Albemarle, who won the high jump, long jump and triple jump. He set a county record for the triple jump with his distance of 44 feet, 2 inches, besting the previous mark set by Tramion Knight of 44-3/4.

The Male Runner of the Year was Joshua Honeycutt of South Stanly who took first place in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

On the women’s side, Anniston Talbert of North Stanly was voted as the Female Field Athlete of the Year, finishing second in the shotput and third in discus.

Onii Bivens, a senior with West Stanly, was the Female Runner of the Year finishing first in the 100- and 200-meter races along with second place in the 400.
