The South Stanly softball team moved up in the state’s rankings and was the only of four Stanly schools who claimed their respective conferences’ tournament titles this past week.

South advanced to the Yadkin Valley Conference finals with a 12-0 win over Gray Stone in the semifinals, then beat Mount Pleasant 7-1 24 hours later in the finals.

Senior pitcher Ali Glover went the distance on the mound for South (22-3) allowing one earned run while scattering four hits. The only run of the game for Mount (14-8) was a solo home run from sophomore Avery Tucker in the first inning.

The Bulls scored seven unanswered runs in the game, with junior Mattie Poulos having a monster night. She had a double and two home runs, scoring three runs herself and driving in six for South. Mary Hinson and Kassie Swink added two hits each for the Bulls.

South Stanly moved up to No. 2 overall in the state on MaxPreps regardless of classification and maintained the top spot in the 1A Western Region.

The Bulls will be at home Tuesday in the state playoffs; brackets are expected to be released Monday.
