Stanly Community College students inducted into Phi Theta Kappa

Stanly Community College (SCC) recently held its annual induction ceremony for the Alpha Psi Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society.

The mission of Phi Theta Kappa Society is to recognize outstanding academic accomplishments of two-year college students internationally and provide opportunities for the members to develop professional and leadership skills.

To be invited for membership at SCC, students must earn a 3.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and must have completed at least 15 semester hours of credit toward an associate degree.
Students must also keep a 3.50 GPA to adhere to eligibility requirements.

The Alpha Psi Upsilon chapter has welcomed 80 new members since August 2020.

Phi Theta Kappa Advisor Tanya Nicks opened the ceremony by welcoming family, friends and guests.

Ashley McCubbin, vice president of the chapter, shared the four hallmarks of the organization: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

Nicks also shared remarks including chapter accomplishments including writing notes and cards of encouragement to homeless children and providing information about the importance and need for recycling while passing out reusable water bottles.

Appreciation for service and leadership was expressed to outgoing Chapter President Darrell Roberts and Vice President McCubbin.

Tammi McIlwaine, associate vice president of the School of Transfer and Business, and Dr. Beth Hopkins, dean of university transfer and Business, participated in the induction of the new members.
SCC’s Alpha Psi Upsilon Chapter was chartered in 1993.
