Albemarle firefighters extinguish fires at laundromat, home

Albemarle firefighters responded to two structure fires within 24 hours.

Firefighters was dispatched at 12:32 p.m. Tuesday for a fire at the laundromat at 1303 Bird Road.

There was a fire inside one of the dryer units, according to a city spokesman. The fire caused damage to the dryer and celling above it. Firefighters had it under control within a few minutes of arrival.

Approximately six people inside the laundromat were able to evacuate safely.

The fire appears to be unintentional, the spokesman said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters also responded to a report of a structure fire at a home on Eben Street at approximately 4:25 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters found a fire at a stove in the kitchen. They were able to gain control within 4-5 minutes of arrival on scene. Damage was contained to the kitchen. The home’s two occupants were able to evacuate safely. Firefighters were also able to safely remove a cat, kittens and a dog.
