City of Albemarle City Manager Michael Ferris has appointed Jay Voyles as the new director of public utilities.

Voyles began his career with the city in the Planning and Development Services department in 2018. During his time in that role, he worked on commercial, industrial and residential projects directly tied to land use and public utilities. In April 2022, Voyles accepted a position as the assistant director of public utilities.

“Jay Voyles brings valuable knowledge about the City of Albemarle’s operations and its needs to his role as director of public utilities,” said Ferris. “Since Jay joined our organization, he has consistently shown skill in project management, customer service, and strong leadership.”

In his role as director, Voyles will work to meet the growing needs of utility customers and complete projects to improve infrastructure and safeguard service reliability, which is a priority of the city’s Strategic Plan.

“I’m looking forward to working on projects that modernize our service capabilities. This will allow customers to establish effective cost saving and usage reduction strategies, receive service outage notifications, and do more utility account activity online,” said Voyles.

Voyles will also work to develop Public Utilities’ employees.

“Our employees work around the clock to ensure customers are billed accurately, receive safe and clean drinking water, wastewater collection services and reliable electric service. I am looking forward to establishing career development ladders that incentivize continued education, certification, and continuous improvement to enhance the service levels we provide to customers,” said Voyles.

Voyles earned a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Geographic Information Systems from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Voyles also holds an NCDOT certification in erosion control and is a North Carolina Certified Property Mapper.
