A North Stanly High School senior has set out to make a difference in the lives of disabled individuals in Stanly County.

KJ Cooper, as part of his NC Governor’s Page Service Project, built a custom cedar chest to auction off to the highest bidder. He plans to the use the funds to build handicapped ramps for those in need.

Many many remember Emily Carter, KJ’s “Aunt Me,” who lived as a quadriplegic most of her life after being diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor.

Prior to being placed on a ventilator, Carter spoke at meetings to educate and advocate for accommodations for all in need

“Although my aunt passed away when I was 7, she left a mark on my heart,” Cooper said.

He has set up his non-profit organization, Ramp Up 4 Emily, where donations can be made. Also, if anyone would like to bid on the custom chest, a direct message can be sent to KJ Cooper through Facebook.

Smith’s Home Furnishings in Albemarle has the chest on display in its local artist section. All proceeds will be used to buy materials to build ramps for those in need. Bidding closes at midnight Nov. 15.

He hopes this project will challenge other youth to get involved and help make a difference in their communities.

Cooper will attend Pfeiffer University to major in communications next year.
