Political newcomer Dale Ward defeated incumbent mayor Anne Harwood and candidate Selenia Hinson for an at-large seat on the Badin Town Council.

Ward, who led the at-large race with 218 votes (51%) to Harwood’s 130 (30%) and Hinson’s 82 (19%), said his goals moving forward would include improved communication and transparency, and maintaining the town’s attractive appearance.

“We need to improve communications between the citizens of Badin and the council,” said Ward, who also expressed a desire for better transparency between government and the citizens, particularly with budget matters.

“Being a small town, we don’t have a big budget, so it’s important that people know how their money is being spent,” he said.

“We also have a really nice, attractive community,” said Ward, who said the town needs to make sure a neat appearance is preserved by proper maintenance and care of the town’s streets and right-of-ways.

Incumbent council member and mayor pro-tem Deloris Chambers retained her West Badin district seat, tallying 167 votes (42%) over challengers Detrica Watkins (118 votes, 30%) and Daniel Quick (109 votes, 28%).

In Badin’s East District, Charles (Charlie) Council was elected without opposition.
