A bicyclist involved in a Monday morning crash on U.S. Highway 52 had to be airlifted.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Taylor, Tyrell Jones was riding a bicycle going northbound in the southbound lane of U.S. 52.

A 2007 Honda driven by Amber Aldinger was in the eastbound travel lane on Springdale Drive. When the Honda attempted to turn right, the bicycle pulled out in front of the car and the two collided at approximately 8:04 a.m., Taylor said.

Jones was medevaced via helicopter to Atrium Health Main in Charlotte with his injuries. Aldinger was not injured.

According to Taylor, no charges have been filed at this time. However, the district attorney is reviewing the situation and the case is pending.

Taylor said the biggest thing about the incident was that the bike was on the wrong side of the road.

“Just like a vehicle, you’ve got to follow the same guidelines as a motor vehicle,” Taylor said.
