Community collects more than 5,000 pounds of food for SCCM

The 2022 Feed the 5K lived up to its name with more than 5,000 pounds of non-perishable food items donated to Stanly Community Christian Ministry.
More than 200 runners, walkers and community members gathered at Frank Liske Park in Concord for a 5K run/walk event organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Instead of paying an entry fee, participants collected and donated non-perishable food items, which produced more than 3,000 pounds of food donations.
“We anticipate this food reaching far and wide throughout Stanly County,” Heather Kilde, executive director of Stanly Community Christian Ministry, said at the event.
“We’re here today to help people finish their race,” Martha Sue Hall, mayor pro-tem of Albemarle, said after the 5K. “Our race is continuing to go on every day of our lives. Thank you for what you do, what you did today and what you brought.”
In addition to the food items collected at the event, the Church also donated about 2,000 pounds of non-perishable foods from its bishop’s storehouse in Greensboro.
