DAR awards Good Citizens for 2022

The Yadkin River Patriots Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recognized six high school seniors as DAR Good Citizens at the DAR meeting on Nov. 18 at the Stanly County Family YMCA Pavilion.
Parents and guidance counselors or other school representatives were invited to join members of the DAR for refreshments and to hear the students read their essays.
This year’s DAR Good Citizens are Abigail Wahl, North Stanly High School; Annie Phillips, South Stanly High School; Makayla Eudy, Stanly Early College High School; Sarah VanHorn, Gray Stone Day School; Sheylyn Riddle, Stanly STEM Early College; and Zachary Schrump, Albemarle High School.
Wahl was this year’s winning DAR Good Citizen. She received a check for $100 from the local DAR chapter and will advance to the state contest.

Each DAR Good Citizen received a Good Citizen pin, a chart explaining the pin’s significance, a certificate and a wallet card.
The DAR Good Citizens program and essay contest are intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to high school seniors. Only one student per high school may receive this recognition.
The scholarship program consists of two parts. Part one involves the student’s describing how they have demonstrated the qualities of a good citizen in four areas: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Part two is a timed essay to be written by the student during one sitting under the supervision of a faculty member. The essay must be at most 550 words and completed within two hours without assistance or reference material. The essay’s title was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” This year’s focus question was: “How will the essential actions of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism) meet the challenges that America faces in this decade?”
The essays are all submitted to non-DAR judges who independently evaluate the student’s description of their qualities of a good citizen and how well they addressed the essay topic. The judge’s scoring is done using forms provided by the National Society of the DAR.
