Badin installed two new council members and chose a new mayor and mayor pro tem at Tuesday’s meeting of the town council.

Dale Ward, who defeated sitting mayor Anne Harwood for an at-large seat on the council, took the oath of office, along with new council member Charlie Council, who ran unopposed for a seat from the East Badin district.

To serve for two years as the town’s mayor, Councilman Gary Lowder was chosen with a 4-1 vote, with Deloris Chambers casting her vote for herself.

Demar Huntley was elected as the board’s new mayor pro-tem, also by a 4-1 vote, with Chambers, who was the mayor pro tem, voting for herself.

Regarding his election as mayor, Lowder said he was a little suprised but also felt like he might be elected mayor.

“Iv’e been here a while and I have good friends on the board. I’m just a plain old guy trying to do what I can for this town and the people living here,” Lowder said.

The new mayor said the town council was like having five mayors, adding the council will do things together as a group.”

Lowder said he wants the town’s government to be clear, open and transparent, and be able to talk to the town’s citizens.

“We’ve got a lot of work do…we will keep things going. Anything else that pops up in the way, we will take care of it.”
