Shoppers who frequented one of the newest Dollar General locations in Stanly County may have to find another location.

The Millingport store has voluntarily closed after receiving a designation of being unfit for human habitation by the county’s Office of Inspections.

Inspection director Chris Moon said a long-term water leak “might have compromised the parking lot or the foundation of the building.”

Moon said Dollar General is “in the process” of fixing the water line and has secured a permit for the repairs.

He said an engineer must evaluate the structure before the business can open back up.

County Manager Andy Lucas said Moon gave the business the option to open a back door with parking along the side, but the concerns on the foundation had to do with the water leak causing a possible sinkhole.

Lucas said the company “decided to close” the store, but the county did not tell Dollar General they had to close.

In a email from the public relations department of Dollar General, the company stated it “hopes to reopen later this week to continue serving residents of Stanly County. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers.”
