The City of Albemarle issued a statement Friday morning on its website claiming “unusual activity on its computer network.”

“We proactively disabled our network environment and reported the activity to state and federal law enforcement authorities, which are investigating this matter. Further, we are diligently working to determine what happened, including impact to data.”

The activity on the network impacted Albemarle’s City Council meeting Monday night, which was not streamed online or recorded like usual. The city’s online agenda system, where residents can have access to relevant documents discussed during council meetings, remains down as well.

“Critical business operations including police, fire, public utilities, public works, customer service and parks and recreation continue to serve customers,” the statement continued. “Should residents or patrons wish to contact us, they may use the contact directory on our website — https://www.albemarlenc.gov/staff.

“We appreciate our residents’ and patrons’ patience and understanding as we work to determine what occurred.”
