An early Monday morning single-car collision in Montgomery County resulted in the death of two Stanly County residents, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Norwood resident Bailey Alan Michael Hatley, 21, was driving “at a high rate of speed” northeast along N.C. Highway 731 at Powell Store Road when his vehicle, a 1995 Subaru, traveled left of center and collided with a tree, according to information provided by Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol was dispatched to the scene at 7:40 a.m.

Both Hatley and Norwood resident Cecilia Whitley, 30, died at the scene. Neither were wearing a seat belt, Highway Patrol said, and at this time, alcohol was not believed to be involved.
