A passenger died following a single-vehicle crash on N.C. Highway 742 Monday morning.

Around 5:40 a.m., Concord resident Alan Luna was driving a 2022 Ram 4500 that was traveling south on N.C. 742 when it briefly ran off the road and overturned, N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Trooper B.L. Baucom said speed was a factor in the crash and morning fog was significant. Highway Patrol said the crash closed part of N.C. 742 near Old Sandbar Road.

Jose Rodriguez-Lopez of Winston-Salem died at the scene, Baucom said, while Luna and the other two passengers, Rafael Rodriguez of Lenoir and Noe Lemus-Lopez of Winston-Salem, were taken to Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord for minor injuries.

Only Luna and Rodriguez were wearing seat belts, Baucom said. He added that alcohol did not appear to have played a factor.

Luna, 28, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and careless and reckless driving.
