Each year, the Albemarle Rotary Club selects a member as the Rotarian of the Year. This must be someone who lives the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” and has dedicated substantial time and efforts toward the purposes of Rotary.
A committee of past awardees makes the selection based on the impact this person has had on the community, on Rotary International and on the local Rotary Club.
Past-President and 2022 Rotarian of the Year Jan Goetz presented the 2023 Rotarian of the Year award on Thursday to Sandy Selvy-Mullis.
In the last year, Selvy-Mullis has brought in at least six new members, led the efforts for the Reverse Raffle and participated in all Rotary service projects, Goetz said.
As the pandemic began, several Rotarians stepped up to take over a route for delivering meals to shut-ins. She volunteered to take a turn and has continued in that role, often volunteering to substitute when another volunteer has a conflict.
She also recently served as secretary for two years which involved recording weekly meeting attendance and compiling the minutes for board meetings.
“In her role as director of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, she has encouraged new business leaders to consider networking through Rotary. The friendships gained in Rotary are an added benefit to membership,” Albemarle Rotary Club President Bob Remsburg said. “Sandy Selvy-Mullis is truly a friend to all and a well-deserved recipient as our 2023 Rotarian of the Year.”
