There was an officer-involved shooting early Thursday morning along N.C. Highway 73 near Lowell Road which resulted in the death of an individual.

Around 1:45 a.m. a sheriff’s deputy and a highway patrol officer were dispatched to help a vehicle that was struck in a ditch, Sheriff Jeff Crisco said.

Crisco said the law enforcement were aware the individual had a gun.

Shortly after, gunfire was exchanged between both law enforcement officials and the individual, resulting in the person’s death, Crisco said.

Neither the sheriff’s deputy nor the highway patrol officer were injured.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation of the incident, which is standard protocol whenever an officer is involved in a shooting, Crisco said.
