A North Carolina-based band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center as part of the Stanly County Concert Association.

Blackwater Band, which performs a beach, soul, funk and classic R&B, will make its debut in the county, according to manager and band member Dale Edwards.

“Our goal is to play something to make you feel good,” Edwards said.

Established in 2009, the Clarkton-based group released its first single, “Staying With Me,” in 2010.

The group plays mostly cover songs from artists such as The Temptations, the soul and R&B duo Sam & Dave and the Zac Brown Band.

“We’re going to try and play something for everybody, a little bit of this and a little bit of that,” Edwards said.

The band will perform for at least two hours with a short intermission. Unlike some bands, which spend time talking and telling stories, Edward said Blackwater is focused exclusively on the music. He estimates the band can play around 14-15 songs an hour.

“You didn’t hire us to talk, you hired us to play music,” he said.

More than anything, Edwards hopes people relax and have a good time.

“Music is supposed to be fun for everybody,” he said, noting playing in the band has been good for his mental health. “I hope our songs put people in a good spot and makes them happy.”

The group features Carlos Perez on guitar and vocals; John Downing on bass guitar and vocals; Dale Edwards on trombone and vocals; Jody Bundy on keyboard, saxophone and vocals; Joey Dunlevy on keyboard, saxophone and vocals; Doug Winstead on keyboard, trumpet, bass and vocals; Travis Creech on drums and vocals; and Willie “B” Sellers on keyboard, guitar and vocals.

Tickets, which cost $20 for adults and $10 for students, are available in advance at the Agri-Civic Center and at Starnes-Bramlett Jewelers.
