The 12th ranked Pfeiffer University softball team won its USA South openers over visiting N.C. Wesleyan by scores of 3-0 and 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field.

In Game One, Pfeiffer (I14-8, 2-0 USA South) sophomore Emma Chopko (Mooresville, N.C.) laced an RBI single through the left side of the Bishops’ infield to stake the Falcons to the early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Pfeiffer would go up 2-0 later in the fourth after a throwing error from the NCWU (13-8, 0-2) third baseman allowed pinch runner Kaylee McCarthy to score.

Sophomore Gracie Griffin made it 3-0 in the fifth inning on an RBI single that scored Kyndell Warren.

Pfeiffer pitcher Kenzi Lyall (Sparta, N.C.) would earn the complete game shutout win, scattering six hits while striking out four Bishop batters, improving her season pitching record to 8-6 overall.

In the second game, the Falcons scored one run in each of the first three innings to claim the early 3-0 lead.

Lyall got things started in the first inning when she laced an RBI single to left field. Warren would then single through the left side in the second to put Pfeiffer up 2-0 while a bases loaded walk issued to Jaci Cook made it 3-0 in the third.

Emma Chopko would launch her second home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, to put Pfeiffer up 4-0 in the sixth inning. Warren would then make it 5-0 with an RBI double to center field later in the inning.

Right-hander Kali Morton (6-2) also tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just two NCWU hits, while striking out nine batters in the win.

The Falcons will hit the road for their first USA South trip of the season on Tuesday when they travel to Raleigh for a doubleheader with William Peace.
