The town of Red Cross will have public hearings before Monday’s regular town council meeting on two topics.

Red Cross will accept public comments on the Red Cross Town Center plan on whether to “table or shelve” it. Recently, the plan, which passed in October 2021, has come under debate from members of the council and the public.

At last month’s meeting of the town council, Red Cross let go the town’s zoning officer while having lengthy discussions on the town center plan. That plan passed in October 2021.

The other public hearing concerns a proposed moratorium on housing developments in Red Cross. Councilman Andrew Smith brought the topic up before the board recently.

At this month’s meeting of the planning board, a proposed subdivision in Red Cross will, for the moment, not come to fruition.

Planning Board Chairman Lionel Hahn spoke about the proposed subdivision, which was discussed at length last month by both the planning board and town council.

Speaking on the subdivision, which would have been on 22 acres at the intersection of Jacob and Ridgecrest Roads, Hahn said “that deal is no longer viable.”

Eric Storey, whose company, Blue Collar Realty, made the offer on the property, said the deal not going forward was unfortunate, in an interview with the Stanly News & Press.

“We were trying to redo the contract to make it fit the town of Red Cross’ new zoning plans, and we just couldn’t come to an agreement on the purchase price,” Storey said.

“Unfortunately, it fell through, but hopefully we’ll keep our name in good standing in the town…I love Western Stanly.”

Storey said with the new residential/agricultural (R/A) minimum lot size of 100,000 square feet, up from the previous 40,000, the number of lots the property could have “was not financially feasible.”

Two properties owned by the town at 163 S. Oak Ridge Road were given a favorable recommendation for rezoning from business to R/A by the planning board.

Monday’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
