Pfeiffer Men’s Lacrosse wins USA South Championship over SVU

The Pfeiffer University men’s lacrosse team captured the second USA South Championship in program history with a 12-9 win over Southern Virginia at Lefko Field on Saturday night.

No. 1 Pfeiffer (16-1) won 12-9 over No. 2 Southern Virginia (9-8).

Visiting Southern Virginia jumped on top of the Falcons with a pair of first quarter goals at 6:22 and 4:09.

Pfeiffer’s  Zach DeFazio got Pfeiffer on the board on an assist from J.P Galloway at 4:02 to cut the lead to 2-1.

SVU then went up 3-1 at 3:38 before the Falcons closed the first quarter with a score at 3:07 on another DeFazio goal.  A Galloway goal at 14:30 of the second quarter drew Pfeiffer even at 3-3.

Neither team would be able to pull away, as Jared Butler scored at 2:27 to pull to 4-4.  SVU then scored with one second before halftime, taking a 5-4 lead into the break.

Pfeiffer came out hot in the third quarter, stringing together five straight to build the lead to 9-5.

SVU scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to close to 9-7,, but a Mason Tardiff tally at 11:56 of the fourth boosted the lead back to three at 10-7

SVU would get no closer than two goals the rest of the way, with Treven King capping the game with a score one second before the final horn, providing the 12-9 final.

Pfeiffer’s DeFazio finished with a team-best four goals while J.P. Galloway managed five points on the night, scoring three times while providing a pair of assists. Quinn Becraft scored twice while King, Butler and Tardiff all registered one goal each.

Defensively, Tucker Hill went 15-of-23 on faceoffs, winning Tournament MVP in the process. Falcon goalkeeper Nate Woodhill made nine saves on the game while SVU counterpart Caleb Brodie had 11 saves in the loss.

The Falcons will await their opponent and destination in the upcoming 2023 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament.
