Stanly Community College’s 6 p.m. graduation ceremony was special for all its attending graduates but especially meaningful for the family of David Lopez Herrera.

Herrera was a Stanly Early College student unable to accept his high school diploma and Associate in Science degree, both of which he earned within four years. After his junior year, he made the decision to join the United States Marine Corps and was scheduled to begin basic training in June.

The week prior to graduation, the Marines called for Herrera to begin serving his country on May 8, just three days prior to graduation. He was sent to basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina.

SCC Vice President of Student Success Dr. Carmen Nunalee shared this information with the graduates and guests and thanked David for his service.

At that time, Nunalee invited his mother, Sara Herrera del Toro, to come on stage to accept his diploma signifying his completion of an Associate in Science degree from the college on his behalf.

His mother and family were extremely grateful to the college for honoring the accomplishments of their son.
