Stanly Community College shines at state FBLA-Collegiate conference

Stanly Community College recently returned from the state’s Future Business Leaders of America Collegiate (FBLA-C) conference in Charlotte with multiple accolades.
SCC was one of three state “Gold Seal Chapter” designees and received the Professional Division-Foundation’s “Chapter of the Year” Award.
Agribusiness student Chloee Thomas was inducted into “Who’s Who in NC FBLA Collegiate” for 2023.
Stanly County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Sandy Selvy-Mullis was named this year’s North Carolina Future Business Leaders of America Collegiate Business Person of the Year.

In addition to the award announcement at the state conference, Chapter President Toby Neal presented Selvy-Mullis with the award at the May Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meeting.
Stanly County business owners led two of nine leadership development sessions.
Garrett Starnes, owner of The Tomahawk Throwing Range in Albemarle, shared information about opening a new business, while Charlotte Maness, a well-known human resources consultant from Albemarle, discussed the importance of career mentors.
During the NC FBLA-Collegiate’s state conference, Calvin Sams was posthumously presented the state association’s Professional Division-Foundation Distinguished Service Award.

Since his wife Katrina’s long-standing involvement in FBLA-C (Phi Beta Lambda), Sams led workshops, served as a state and national competitive event judge and provided student support in many ways.
She accepted the award from the Professional Division-Foundation Board President Rick Gardner, a former SCC chapter and state president.
SCC Business Administration student Toby Neal was one of the five presiding officers and elected as the 2023-24 state Executive Vice President. At the concluding awards banquet, he was also announced as North Carolina’s candidate for the office of national president.
In competitive events, SCC joined UNC-Chapel Hill and Campbell University in having the most winners. While the top eight students are recognized, first and second place winners are eligible for the national competition.
