Dr. Edward S. Bivens was originally from Wadesboro. He received his undergraduate degree from Davidson in 1937, followed by a degree from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1938. Bivens received his MD from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest in 1946.

In 1952, Bivens became the first radiologist on the staff at Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle, and later in 1960, he was named chief of staff. After leaving Stanly County in 1966, Dr. Bivens moved his family to the Atlanta area, where he spent the next 34 years at several different medical facilities.

Dr. Bivens was an Eagle Scout and was very involved with scouting his entire life. With his guidance, while they had lived in Albemarle, his four sons, shown from left, Ed, Brown, Jim and Les, became Eagle Scouts as well.
