The South Stanly Youth Football League 7-on-7 flag football team earned the 2023 Uwharrie Youth Football League championship Oct. 28 with a 14-8 upset win.

The Little Bulls shut out the Timberwolves in the first half, and allowed only one scoring drive in the second.

“I’m very proud of this team. They played an outstanding game against a very tough opponent,” head coach David Thompson said.

After an 0 and 2 start to the season, the Little Bulls battled back to win three of their remaining four games.

The team finished the regular season tied for the No. 4 seed and were able to advance to the championship game following doubleheader victories against North Stanly and Albemarle on Oct. 21.

“This team, and our 11-on-11 team, played so well together. They developed such a strong bond throughout the season,” Thompson said. “One thing I’ve tried to emphasize this season is the concept of family and how important it is to work together and have each other’s back. I really think these kids embodied that this season.”
