Stanly Community College (SCC) Respiratory Therapy Director Amy Witschey was recently honored as the Gail Gane Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Society for Respiratory Care (NCSRC).
The award resulted from her contributions to and service and leadership in respiratory therapy education over the past year.
Witschey has served as SCC’s respiratory therapy program director since 2022. She earned her Master of Science in Respiratory Care in 2020 from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and her Bachelor of Science from Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Before her position at Stanly Community College, she worked in various roles at Carolinas Medical Center – NorthEast (now Atrium Health Cabarrus). Her roles included clinical respiratory specialist, education/PI coordinator and lead respiratory therapist.
Witschey also worked as a respiratory therapist at the Ohio State University Medical Center.
“Receiving this award is a testament to Amy’s unwavering commitment to her field and dedication to the education and growth of future respiratory therapists,” said Christie Honeycutt, associate vice president of health sciences and public services for SCC. “She has consistently demonstrated exemplary teaching skills, innovative approaches to education, and a genuine passion for shaping the future of our students. We are fortunate to have Amy leading our program.”
NCSRC is a non-profit organization that supports and benefits the 5,169 respiratory care practitioners of North Carolina. Witschey serves as the organization’s vice president and sits on the Budget & Audit and Program & Education committees.
