The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was well observed in Stanly County, beginning with the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast at the E.E. Waddell Center.

A capacity crowd heard a powerful speech given by Dr. Reginald Boyd Jr., and witnessed the presentation of a special award to the family of the former president of the Stanly County NAACP Tym Scott.

Helping to make this event so special was a praise dance performed by “Sons of Thunder” from Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.

The special day continued later in the day with the B4L Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Gospel Showcase, featuring Stellar Award winning gospel artist Luther Barnes.

The 2024 Community Civic Awards were presented at this time to Rev. D.L. Thompson and First Lady Edna Thompson, Rev. Parnell Kelly Jr. and First Lady Marianne Kelly, Bishop Roy Washington and First Lady Joretha Washington, Pastor Darryl Medley, Midge Boulware, Tina Townsend, Jackie Burch and Johnnie M. Harris.
