Pfeiffer University sophomore Doug Smith went off for a triple-double with 14 points, 14 rebounds and 12 blocks, but the Pfeiffer men’s basketball team fell to the Christopher Newport Captains 68-61 on the road Monday.

Smith’s triple double is the first in Pfeiffer’s Division III era and is the first USA South player to achieve the feat since 2009 when Averett’s Jonathan Rumley posted 20 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists.

Additionally, Smith’s 12 blocks ties the Pfeiffer single-game record. Smith now shares the feat with Antonio Harvey, who set the 12-block mark on Feb. 20, 1993 against Mount Olive.

The 12 blocks also sets a new USA South single-game record.  The previous league mark was 11 blocks, shared by three players, with Methodist’s Marcus Connor last achieving the feat on Feb. 7, 2009 against Ferrum.

In addition to Smith’s triple double, the Falcons (7-9) were led by Sean Sucarichi, who put up eight points and nine rebounds, and by Clayton Robinson, who chipped in with eight points and six rebounds coming off the bench.

Sucarichi pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Pfeiffer offense which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 14 second chance points.
