“The selection of Darren Rhodes as interim city manager allows us to have a stable environment while the city moves forward with essential services and critical projects. Mr. Rhodes has proven to be a leader who is willing to work with everyone. We’re fortunate to have Mr. Rhodes’ skill, experience and familiarity with our operations,” Albemarle Mayor Ronnie Michael said.

Rhodes was appointed assistant city manager for the City of Albemarle in October 2022. He brings 28 years of experience at both the local and state levels of government. Prior to coming to the City of Albemarle, Rhodes was the manager of the North Carolina Rural Planning Program, which focuses on economic development, planning services and assistance for cities and towns across North Carolina.

As interim city manager, Rhodes will oversee day-to-day operations of the city, which include an electric system, water and wastewater system, landfill facility, public housing department, parks and recreation department, police department, fire department and other traditional city departments and services.
