Albemarle Police Department is investigating a crash that resulted in a fatality.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday, APD officers were called to a
reported two vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 52 in the area of Old Charlotte Road.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver of a sedan, 58-year-old Darryl Chappell of Albemarle, was traveling north on U.S. 52 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a passenger van with five occupants head-on.

Chappell was pronounced dead at the scene. All five occupants of the van were taken to the hospital for treatment.

No additional details are available at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
