The Stanly County Solid Waste Department, City of Albemarle, Republic Services, PowerHouse Recycling and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will be providing services again this year for the Household Hazardous Waste Event.

A household hazardous waste collection event and an electronics-recycling event will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 6 in the rear parking lot of the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center, 26032-B Newt Road, Albemarle.

Leave all materials in their original containers, place in a cardboard box and transport in trunk or rear area of your vehicle.

All patrons are asked to stay in their vehicle. This event is for residents of Stanly County. No businesses or churches are allowed.

Materials accepted for hazardous waste recycling/disposal include:

• Acids/bases, aerosols, automotive products, drain openers, flammables, furniture finishes/strippers, household batteries, household cleaners/polishes, paint and paint products, wood preservatives and household florescent bulbs.

• Pesticides: Nearly all pesticide products will be accepted. For liquid pesticide containers larger than 5 gallons or for unlabeled pesticides, contact the Cooperative Extension Office for information before bringing to the collection event. Call Katelyn Stovall at 704-986-6104.

• Electronics Recycling Collection: Electronics contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium. This type of material should not be disposed in the landfill. You now have the opportunity to recycle a large portion of the electronics waste stream and to protect the environment.

• Acceptable Electronics: Computers, monitors, typewriters, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, TVs, VCRs, radios, basically anything with a circuit board.

Materials not accepted for recycling or disposal:

• Materials will not be accepted from commercial businesses (small or large quantity hazardous waste generators). Household waste, motor oil over 5 gallons, anti-freeze over 5 gallons, liquid substances over 5 gallons and recyclables other than specified will not be accepted at the event. These items are accepted at the Stanly County Convenience Centers on a daily basis.

• No small appliances will be accepted, including hairdryers, curling irons and microwaves.

• No large appliances/white goods will be accepted, including washers, dryers, freezers, cook stoves or refrigerators.

The City of Albemarle Landfill (704-982-3302) and the Stanly County Convenience Center on Newt Road accept the white goods listed above.

• Do not bring items which are explosive, biologically active or infectious, radioactive or non-hazardous.

The City of Albemarle Solid Waste Facility and the Stanly County Convenience Center on Newt Road accept all the electronics and white goods listed above. All Stanly County Convenience Centers are equipped for receipt of used motor oil and three sites are equipped for receipt of anti-freeze.
