Today’s pictures were first published in the Aug. 16, 1940 edition of the Stanly News & Press. In the top photo, front row: Bobby Youngblood, James Tucker and Marvin Furr; inset: Truett Stallings; back row on the bikes: Don Knotts, Oscar Speight and Kendrick Speight. In the bottom photo, on the bikes, from left: Edward Lowder, Hubert Tucker, Glenn Almond, the Efird Twins (Johnnie and Daniel), Clarence Long, LeRoy Boone and Edwin Boone. Kneeling in from are the Hill brothers (Don and Wade). Several other young men were paper carriers at the time but were not available for the pictures.
