PEEKING INTO THE PAST – Whispering Pines BBQ
Published 9:36 am Sunday, May 5, 2024
According to the June 4, 1946 Stanly News & Press, Lonnie Doby had been attempting to build a service station and café on the road to Salisbury north of Albemarle. Even though World War II had been over since September 1945, getting the supplies needed to complete the project was still difficult. During June 1946, Doby had problems obtaining lumber, but by July he had the building nearly completed. It was at this point, however, that he struggled to get the needed plate glass for the building’s large windows. Fortunately, Doby was able to work everything out and the Aug. 6, 1946 Stanly News & Press announced that the business, Whispering Pines, was finally open. Today’s picture was cropped from a larger photo to give a better view of the gas pumps that were once outside the business. The full view will be shown in my next story. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
