This photo of the girls holding baby dolls is from the History Center collection. According to what was written on the photo, this was from Mrs. Donaghy’s New London High School class in 1909. I found old newspaper clippings that explained that Elizabeth Donaghy was a teacher from Ohio who moved in early September 1909 to New London to teach “elocution.” She stayed less than a year and moved back to Ohio in May 1910. The only possible explanation I could find about this photo was a short description of a public recital by her class on April 2, 1910. The Stanly Enterprise stated, “The entertainment was given in two parts, the first being devoted to readings, music, pantomimes, and drills” and the “second to the production of a one-act farce by eight New London girls.” Even though the date of the recital does not match what is written on the photo, I wonder if this might not have something to do with the one-act farce… {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
