In early 1991, Vulcan Industries of Gold Hill donated a large rectangular-shaped rock that was placed along U.S. Highway 52 near the front of North Stanly High School. Vulcan’s parent company, at the national level, was instrumental in arranging to have similar rocks placed at schools around the country. At the time of the installation of the North Stanly rock, schools in Cabarrus and Davidson County had them as well. The idea for placing these rocks was so the students at each school could repaint them periodically with new pictures and messages. At North Stanly, the art classes have continued, over the years, the tradition of painting their school rock. Today’s photo from the April 7, 1991 Stanly News & Press, shows Dathan Hall and Julie Hitch painting the rock, soon after its installation. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
