ALBEMARLE – Trinity High School scored twice in the second half and once more for the final points in overtime to hand Albemarle its second loss of the year. Daniel “Buck“ Rogers took a quick pitch in from six-yards out for the final six of the game as the visitors won in overtime 34-28.
Rogers and his Bulldogs of the Piedmont Conference had more than 300 yards on the ground against a young Albemarle (0-2) defensive line.
Trinity (1-1), who were shut out by Starmount in the opening week, opened with a scoring series and its only completion of the game.
However, Albemarle responded on its first offensive play of the game with a big 80-yard touchdown pass-and-run play to Zylon Geiger.
The duo of seniors quarterback Dre Davis and Geiger went on to connect again in the second half for another score. Davis was 5 of 10 for 124 yards. Geiger had four catches for 110 yards.
The Bulldogs, who led by a touchdown at the break, added 177 yards rushing from six separate backs including Kaine McLendon and Shoddy Pergee who both found the end zone.
”We got to do a better job winning the line of scrimmage – especially on defense,” Bulldog head coach Richard Davis said. “(Trinity) had their way, up front, with us. It was about time of possession — they had the ball more and that’s the difference in the ball game.”
Albemarle sophomore kicker Carlos Popoca was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points. The locals had nine possessions with 11 first downs.
Knotted at 28-28, Albemarle was driving deep into Trinity territory when Davis came up slightly short of a first down on fourth down and was hit late on the stadium track which became a dead-ball foul.
The ball turned over and Trinity’s offense was penalized.
“We have to finish that drive,” Davis said. “We gave ourselves plenty of opportunities, we just have to capitalize. We are going to right the ship. We’re going to get it right.”
After a big sack from Elijah “Big E” O’Neil, Zyion Geiger had a huge punt return which was stripped loose on Trinity’s 18-yard-line with 26 seconds on the clock.
Albemarle travels to West Stanly (0-2) Friday night. The Colts lost Monday at Carson. 38-14.
