Today’s picture, from the History Center collection, is a view looking northwest. It is believed to have been taken from the top of the Stanly County Loan & Trust building that had been completed in 1906. This building was at the corner of North Second and West Main streets. It later was the home of First National and, even later, First Union. The steeple in the background is on the original First Presbyterian Church that was located on North First Street diagonally across the intersection from the current Presbyterian church building. According to History Center records, the stables that can be seen in the front right corner of the picture are thought to have belonged to P.J. Huneycutt’s Furniture Store. These stables would have housed the horses used to haul the hearse for the funeral home portion of the business. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
