The E.E. Waddell Community Center in Albemarle hosted its annual Senior Valentine’s Day Ball on Thursday.
The event was organized by Billy McRae, the center’s supervisor of nearly 20 years. In addition to overseeing the Valentine’s Day Ball, McRae is responsible for various community events and programs, including back-to-school initiatives for children and Christmas celebrations for seniors and youth.
The Valentine’s Ball was a lively celebration featuring line dancing, a photo booth, prize giveaways and a red carpet for couples to walk down and take pictures. Attendees enjoyed a dinner prepared by McRae, along with entertainment from comedian Sharon “Jareek Mama” Little and music provided by Mario Simmons, also known as DJ Lyfe. A special highlight of the evening was the rose ceremony, where ladies were presented with roses.

More than 100 seniors attended the event, dressed elegantly in shades of red, white and pink.
McRae emphasized the importance of community inclusion, stating, “Whether it’s seniors, kids or other community members, we’re making sure that we miss no one in Parks and Recreation.”
The event was made possible with the help of volunteers, including those who regularly participate in activities at the center, such as basketball and weightlifting.
Looking ahead, the center is preparing for the Uwharrie Senior Games programs with Albemarle Parks and Recreation.
