West Stanly, Midland, Georgeville, Ridgecrest and Oakboro fire departments were dispatched Saturday afternoon to the Carolina Christian School on Renee Ford Road in Locust where a single-story mobile classroom was on fire.

West Stanly Engine 1 arrived within four minutes of being dispatched, according to the West Stanly Fire Department. Unit crews found a large amount of fire in the void space of the ceiling that was extending into the classroom.

The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes and the fire departments returned to service. West Stanly remained on the scene while the Stanly County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated.

Stanly County Fire Marshal Danny Barham said the fire was accidental and resulted from the classroom heating unit. He said the case is closed.

Barham said around a third of the whole roof is destroyed and the beam that supports the entire roof will have to be replaced.
