Scholarship

Susan W. Howell, a senior at North Stanly High School, had won the 1966 Alcoa Foundation Scholarship worth $3,000 over a four-year period.

The honor was awarded to the son or daughter of an Alcoa employee at the company’s Badin Works or Nantahala Power and Light Company. Howell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Howell of Badin, was the first winner from Badin Works since 1962.

The award was based solely on college board examination scores and high school grades.

Bank

North Carolina Savings & Loan Association had moved into its new home on North First Street from its former quarters on North Second Street.

Beautification

More than 400 people, including three from Albemarle, had attended the Governor’s Conference on Beautification in Raleigh. Attending from Albemarle were City Manager Wilson D. Coleman, Chamber Executive Bob Crawford and Wayne Mabry of Alcoa’s public relations department.

Homes

Plans were generally complete for the April Tour of Homes sponsored by the Albemarle Garden Club Council, it was announced by Mrs. Donald Hammond of the Dogwood Garden Club, which was coordinating the tour.

Mrs. Sam Andrew was chairwoman of ticket sales. The five homes to be shown were the ones of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Chandler of Wesley Heights, Mary Hearne of West South Street, Mr. and Mrs. “Bud” Auten of 909 E. Main St., Mrs. Rembert Rogers at 916 Smith St. and Dr. and Mrs. W.H. Freeman on Colonial Drive.
