YMCA eyes $5M renovation in Albemarle, $17M construction in Locust

The Stanly County Family YMCA Board of Directors has unveiled plans to renovate its facility on North First Street in Albemarle and to construct a YMCA in Locust.
According to YMCA CEO George Crooker, the Albemarle facility needs a significant renovation. Built in 1950, the planned $5 million renovation will help modernize the facility and make it more efficient and user friendly.
Goals for this project include a redesigned lobby for improved flow and social opportunities, increased sightlines to help with supervision, centrally located fitness and program spaces and more efficient use of current space.
This renovation is scheduled to begin early next year and take 12 to 15 months to complete. The Y is expected to be open throughout this process.
The Stanly YMCA also has a plan to build a facility in western Stanly to serve existing and future residents in this rapidly growing area.
The proposed $17 million facility will be built with the support of the City of Locust. It will be located on four of 10 acres purchased by the Locust in June and adjacent to Jeff Shelton Memorial Park.
The Y, at approximately 30,000 square feet, may have such amenities as an aquatics facility, fitness and youth areas, a full gym, child watch areas and locker rooms.
It will also be used as an indoor sports complex by Locust Parks & Recreation. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027.
A community campaign to raise funds for both phases of this project kicks off this month.
“Stanly County is fortunate to have community resources such as the Y that enhance the quality of life for our citizens,” says Andy Lucas, county manager and campaign co-chair. “The Y plays a critical role in strengthening and maintaining the resources to build healthy spirits, minds, and bodies of people from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds. The proposed renovation of the Albemarle facility and new facility in western Stanly County will help the Y expand its mission and provide enhanced wellness services to individuals of all ages throughout all our great community.”
The Stanly County Family YMCA will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2025.
“With community support for this vital project, we will be able to continue the mission and vision of the Y through our county for years to come,” Crooker said.
