Albemarle will soon be getting a major economic boost with a Hampton Inn and Suites set to be built in 2020.

Construction of the hotel will start around September of this year and should be completed sometime in 2020, said Ketan Patel, vice president of U.S. Hotels, Inc. and future owner and operator of the Hampton Inn.

The hotel will be built at the corner of Wall Street and N.C. Highway 24-27.

“Hotels are a big need for us,” said Mayor Ronnie Michael.

The people involved are working on drawing up architectural plans and site drawings, Patel said.

The Hampton Inn will have around 90 rooms and will employ 15 to 20 people.

“Hampton Inn is one of the industry leaders in providing hospitality, service and great quality,” Patel said.

Patel has been working on bringing the hotel to Albemarle for three years and it’s been a challenge to find the right land for the hotel.

Lee Allen, broker and owner of Re/Max Town and Country, was integral in helping find the land for the hotel, Patel said.

If it wasn’t for Allen, the project probably wouldn’t have taken place in Albemarle, he said.

Allen is excited to have the hotel in the city.

“Great vibrant communities have at least one hotel that’s less than 10 years old,” Allen said.

He added the Hampton Inn will have a “dramatic increase in our capability to have people coming in” to the city, especially with the new Pfeiffer University campus opening in 2020.

Patel and business partner Vimal Patel founded U.S. Hotels, Inc. in 1994. In 2009 the company was hired to manage the Executive Inn in Albemarle before the hotel was eventually purchased by Dhara Hospitality Group, LLC.

The company currently operates 10 hotels, including five in North Carolina. The company is also planning to soon open a Fairfield Inn and Suites in Rocky Mount and a Springhill Suites in downtown Durham.
