Stanly County Concert Band will offer ‘The Sounds of Stage and Screen’

The Stanly County Concert Band will present “The Sounds of Stage and Screen” at 7 p.m. April 25 at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center.

Tunes from movies, ballet, opera and musicals are included in this spring concert which features the Stanly County Chorale.

Music is included from composers Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin and Aaron Copland.

There is no cost for admission.

“Seventy-Six Trombones” is a show tune and the signature song from the 1957 musical “The Music Man” by Meredith Willson, a film of the same name in 1962 and a made-for-TV movie in 2003.

“Porgy and Bess Highlights” is from the opera by George Gershwin, an American composer and pianist whose compositions spanned popular, jazz and classical genres. The libretto was written by author DuBose Heyward and lyricist Ira Gershwin.

The soundtrack music of “Guardians of the Galaxy” helped to propel the action movie to blockbuster status.

Incorporated within the film score are songs from the 1960s and 1970s, including “Hooked on a Feeling.” The original music in the score was written by Tyler Bates, an American musician, producer and composer for film, television and video game scores.

“Les Miserables Soundtrack Highlights” contains themes from the musical, with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and a book by Schönberg and Boublil. It is based on the 1862 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo.

“How to Train Your Dragon” is a 2010 American 3D computer-animated action-fantasy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Composed by John Powell, the music for this movie features magnificent adventure themes along with hints of Celtic influences.

“When You Believe” is a signature song from the musical “Prince of Egypt.” It was written and composed by Hans Zimmer and Stephen Schwartz. It was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 71st annual ceremony on Aug. 24, 1997. The Stanly County Chorale will join the band on this song.

“The Promise of Living” forms the first act finale of Aaron Copland’s opera “The Tender Land.” The text by Horace Everett is an anthem to rugged self-reliance, community, the sanctity of purposeful labor and the blessings of the harvest.

“Grease” (Selections from) features songs from the 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey with additional songs written by John Farrar. Named after the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as greasers, this arrangement features the iconic songs many have come to love.

“A Bernstein Tribute” highlights some of Leonard Bernstein’s most notable compositions in his “Dances” from “West Side Story,” “Three Dance Episodes” from “On the Town” and excerpts from “Overture to Candide.”

Another performance this season will occur at 7:30 p.m. May 2 for the Thursdays at the Station at Market Station in downtown Albemarle.
