PEEKING INTO THE PAST: Main Street United Methodist Church

On Sunday, Oct. 10, 1909, what is today known as Main Street United Methodist Church in Albemarle was formed following a tent revival held by Rev. E.G. Lowdermilk. Twenty-three local residents got together to become the charter members of what was first known as First Methodist Protestant Church. Construction for the first church building began on Aug. 12, 1910, and it was completed on Oct. 23 the following year. This building was on Broome Street, a few blocks from the location of the current building. An educational building was added in 1920. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed in a fire on Dec. 23, 1927. The construction of the current building was begun in 1928. A parsonage was built in 1945, followed by a large fellowship hall in 1951. An educational building was added in 1962 and a new parsonage was purchased in 1977. In 1968, the name of the church was changed to Main Street United Methodist Church after the merger of the Methodist Church organization with the Evangelical United Brethren. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
