D.G. Harwood, Jr.

RALEIGH: D. G. Harwood, Jr., 90, passed away on September 15, 2018 at Rex Hospital following a brief illness.
Born on June 14, 1928 in Stanly County, N.C., he was the son of the late Dewey Gilbert Harwood, Sr. and Lectie Poplin Harwood.
D.G. was educated at Millingport High School and NC State University.
After helping his father on the farm, D.G. was employed by the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service of NC State University.
Over a 30 year career, he served as Assistant County Agent in Cleveland County, Extension Farm Management Specialist, and Assistant Director for Agriculture and Special Programs.
After retirement, he was active in the Capital City Kiwanis Club, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Springmoor Residents Association.
During his later years, D.G. enjoyed wood working, making toys for his great grandchildren, participating in painting classes, leading his Sunday school class, hand bells and serving on various committees at Springmoor Lifecare Retirement Community.
He is survived by his five children, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Surviving children include Sheron (Harold) Megredy of Cary, Lynn (Dr. George) Edwards, Jr. of Raleigh, Donna (Greg) Mulholland of Winston Salem, Kim (Dr. Bill) Downs of Greenville, N.C., and Craig Harwood of Greenville, S.C. He is also survived by his sister Ree Harwood Phillips of Albemarle.
D. G. was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Jenkins Harwood in 2016.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, September 18, 2018 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 19, at 11 a.m. in the Auditorium of Springmoor Lifecare Retirement Community, 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh. A private burial will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park.
