The Albemarle women’s basketball program opened the 2018-19 season with a road game Nov. 20 at 2A Anson County.

A close game for three quarters, the Bulldogs offense stretched the advantage in the final period for a 10-point road win, 53-43.

Zycoria Tillman led Albemarle (1-0) with 25 points on 7-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-9 from the 3-point arc. Tillman was also 7-of-9 at the foul line.

Kiana Ridley had a double-double with 11 points and 10 steals for the Bulldogs.

As a team, the Bulldogs were 19-of-57 from the field (33.3 percent) and 10-of-17 at the free-throw line (59 percent). Albemarle was 5-of-22 overall on 3-pointers.

Anson (0-2) was led by Revie Byars with 16 points, while Destiny Robinson added 10 points.

Albemarle head coach Eric Davis said the win included “a great effort defensively being short handed. Anson is a strong physical team that played hard; we had to battle them for 32 minutes. Any time you can go (to Anson) and walk out with a win is a great thing.”

Davis added Tillman and Ridley “played great and came up huge” for the Bulldogs.

Albemarle hosts West Stanly (0-1) in a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Colts have not played since losing in the team’s season opener at Gray Stone.
