The West Stanly men’s basketball team trailed by double digits and got close in the latter stages of Wednesday’s game at Monroe, losing to the Redhawks by eight, 58-50.

Hayden Greene led the Colts (6-5) with 22 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 10-of-15 from the field. Austin Medlin added 18 for West, shooting 7-of-18 overall including two makes from the 3-point arc.

Salen Streater paced the Redhawks (3-4) and led all scorers in the game with 30, shooting 11-of-25 from the field including 3-of-9 on 3-pointers and 8-of-16 on foul shots. Trey Shepherd added 12 for Monroe.

The Colts trailed by 16 at halftime, 35-19, and rallied to within seven in the final two minutes.

“We didn’t come out with the kind of energy we needed defensively and on the boards,” West coach John Thompson said. “I was proud of how we fought in the second half, but it’s hard to spot a team 18 points in the first half and expect to win.”

Thompson also said Greene “was really aggressive and we did a good job getting him the ball.”

West hosts Central Cabarrus Saturday at 6:30 p.m., with the women’s varsity team scheduled to play at 5.
